Prof. Mona Jarrahi’s group developed plasmonic terahertz detectors that offer quantum-level sensitivity at room temperature, for the first time. This could enable various planetary, cosmological, and astrophysical observations to be made without the need for cryogenic cooling.
A paper detailing their work is published in Nature Astronomy: https://www.nature.com/articles/s41550-019-0828-6
