Qualcomm Fellowships 2013-2014
Call for Proposals
Submission Date: June 7, 2013
Qualcomm Corporation, a long-standing supporter of the UCLA EE Department, is supporting an innovative way to engage two outstanding PhD students in performing research in the broad areas of interests to Qualcomm within the wireless paradigm. A committee of EE faculty (the Selection Committee) named below invites PhD students who have passed the Preliminary Exam to submit proposals on new research which explores new possibilities in the state-of-the-art wireless technology in all relevant areas including medical applications. The research may relate to, but is not restricted to, novel components, algorithms, protocols, and systems that enhance the functionality of future wireless devices and the user experience associated with such devices. The proposal should clearly indicate how the research when realized will solve a problem or enable a system that otherwise would not have been possible. Since the Selection Committee is from within the Department, it asks the student to prepare and submit the proposal in close consultation with his or her research advisor.
The Selection Committee will choose up to two proposals from those submitted, based on technical merit and likelihood of success. Qualcomm will provide full GSR support, including NRT, to the selected PhD students for Fall Quarter 2013, and Winter and Spring Quarters 2014, accompanied by a likely paid internship at Qualcomm during Summer 2014. The research will be carried out in the EE Department at UCLA.
The proposal should not exceed 5 pages (single space and 12pt font) in length, including all figures, tables and charts. It should contain the following sections:
A. A clear description of the problem to be solved and its relevance to future wireless technology.
B. A brief summary, with references, of the current state-of-the-art related to the proposed research topic.
C. A description of what is new about the proposed approach, and how it will advance the state-of-the-art.
D. The proposed method of solutions and the possible risks of failure.
The proposal must be uploaded at the bottom of this webpage by 11:59 pm on Friday, June 7, 2013. The Selection Committee will select up to two proposals shortly after the deadline.
