Information for Teaching Assistants


General Information

Your Appointment

  • Starts on the first day of the quarter.
  • A 50% TA is hired for 20 hours of work per week.
  • You can TA for at most 12 quarters.
  • Your combined number of quarters as a TA and as a Graduate Student Researcher cannot exceed 18.
  • You must enroll in EE375 (Teaching Apprentice Practicum).
  • You should not take more than two lecture courses while you are a TA.

Your Responsibilities as TA

  • Read the EEweb Guide for Instructors and TAs.
  • Complele the Course Info section for your course on EEweb before instruction starts.
  • Discussion and lab sections:
    • TAs of lecture courses review material and discuss practice problems, as directed by the instructor.
    • Lab TAs assist in preparing and supervising lab sessions.
  • Office hours:
    • Minimum two hours, announced on EEweb (under Class Info).
    • Coordinate your schedule with the other TAs and the instructor.
    • Contact the Department Manager (Dan Spencer) to reserve a room.
  • Homework
    • Assist instructor with preparation of homework assignments.
    • Help write homework solutions.
    • TAs do not grade the homework. (Grading is done by readers.)
  • Exams
    • Proctor midterm and final exams.
    • Help grade exams.
  • EEweb
    • Complete the "Course Info" page before instruction starts.
    • Answer student questions on on-line forum.
    • Upload assignments and solutions, and ABET material (more later).
  • Other
    • Lab TAs grade lab reports.
    • Attend lectures if requested by instructor.
    • Meet frequently with the instructor.

Your Responsibilities on EEweb

  • Read the EEweb Guide for Instructors and TAs.
  • Stay alert to email communications from EEweb.
  • Upload the student course grades on a regular basis into the EEweb gradebook.
  • Encourage students during the discussion sections to participate in the end-of-course course surveys.
  • Save copies of samples of student works on a regular basis during the quarter, e.g., homework solutions, midterm and final exam solutions, quiz solutions, project reports.
  • Prepare a folder for the course containing all required ABET material and organize the folder exactly in the manner explained in Section 10 of this guide. At the end of quarter, the folder must be turned over to the Chair's assistant office.
  • Upload the ABET problem and its solution in a well formatted and organized manner into EEweb. Upload samples of student solutions of ABET problem into EEweb as well.
  • Upload ABET problem grades into the gradebook of EEweb.
  • Interact with the instructor to complete the Instructor Evaluation of Student Performance form. The completed form must have meaningful answers to the questions.

Ethics

  • Student confidentiality. Student work and grades must be kept confidential.
  • Sexual harassment. Don't make advances to students. Don't make offensive comments or jokes. For a definition and more information, see the website of the UCLA Sexual Harassment Prevention Office.
  • Do not date students in your class.
  • Academic integrity. Report suspected cheating to the instructor.

Accreditation

  • ABET accredits our undergraduate program.
    • Accreditation requires a documented system of evaluation and improvement of the program.
    • Your role is described in the EEweb Guide for Instructors and TAs.
  • ABET course binder:
    • Select three students in the class (representing a range of performance).
    • Upload copies of all their written work to EEweb. There are scanners in the SEASnet office.
    • Submit a folder with hardcopies to the Chair's office after the quarter.
  • The ABET problem
    • A midterm or final exam problem selected by the instructor to test some of the outcomes of the course.
    • Grades (on a scale of 100) are entered separately in the EEweb gradebook.
    • Upload a copy of the problem, its solution, and answers from 3 students.

Teaching

  • The department encourages all Ph.D. students to TA at least one quarter, to gain teaching experience.
  • Teaching a subject is the best way to learn it.
  • Good teaching helps research and vice-versa.
  • Everyone can be an excellent teacher. Good teaching requires effort, preparation, and practice.
  • If you do it well, it is very rewarding.
  • Your efforts are critical for the quality of our undergraduate program.
